Former property lawyer. Owns the citation rule and says no to features that bend it.
We built the research assistant we wanted to hire
Wickline Labs is eleven people in Rotterdam and Toronto. We spent years reading contracts and board packs for a living, and we were tired of tools that sounded sure and couldn't show their work.
Why build another AI assistant?
Because "probably right" isn't good enough at work
Most assistants are built to sound helpful. Wickline is built to be checkable.
Ines spent six years in property law reading leases at 11 PM. Jonah ran finance for a logistics company and rebuilt the same board summary every quarter. The tools they tried wrote fluent answers, but checking those answers took as long as reading the files.
So we started from the citation and worked backwards. If Wickline can't point at the sentence, it doesn't write the claim. That rule shapes everything else: the reading pipeline, the tool calls you can open, the way it says "I couldn't find that".
We'd rather Wickline say "I couldn't find that" ten times than guess once.
Four rules the product follows
They're in our onboarding docs and in the code review checklist. When a feature breaks one, the feature changes.
- Rule 1
No source, no claim
Every factual sentence carries a citation to a passage Wickline read in your files.
- Rule 2
Show the work
Searches and reads are tool calls you can open, with the exact input and output.
- Rule 3
Say what's missing
When the files don't answer the question, Wickline says so, and says what it checked.
- Rule 4
Your files stay yours
No training, no resale, deletion that actually deletes, and settings that say what they do.
How we got here
Short version, newest first.
Wickline 2.4 and the Toronto office
Tables inside scans, and a second home for the support team so answers come within a working day on both sides of the Atlantic.
Team plan and audit log
Shared collections for law and finance teams, with an admin who can see every share and export.
Wickline 1.0
PDF and DOCX only, one model, and the citation rule from day one.
Two people and a stack of leases
Ines and Jonah start Wickline Labs with a prototype that read one lease and cited it badly.
Who you'll talk to
Write to any of us. A person answers, usually the person who built the thing you're asking about.
Ran finance before he ran the reading pipeline. Answers the hard questions about tables.
Reads every "where did it get that?" ticket and turns the patterns into fixes.
